I've just passed by bus through Hackney and the scenery was horrible. The streets were very dirty, the buildings looked as if a war had happened there and every street corner was populated by groups of dangerous looking people that seemed to have been put there only to start a fight. And this was during the day.I've been to many countries with many known bad neighborhoods, but Hackney gave me this feeling of unsafe that I haven't experienced anywhere else. Everything was so grim, it looked like one of those horror movies where someone is waiting for you around the corner with a knife.Hackney is my definition of hole.

I'm a white guy from Yorkshire, I spent a week there with work, I want really aware of the number of gangs until I got back home, I like a smoke to relax, I walked the streets of hackney smoking bud due to stopping at premier inn, I never had any trouble, even shared a j with a small group of youths they were good lads and I at no point felt threatened, I think partly because I treat black people the exact same as I would a white person, I think the media is too quick to brand them as gangs, a lot of the time its not gangs but communities sticking together and being loyal to friends and family because those are the morals installed in them at an early age, one petty argument can escalate into a murder or violent assault down to no other reasons than pride and rep. high crime goes hand in hand with poverty not just in London but across the UK and even the world, in London in particular, I think the government and media pigeon hole them as gangs because if the entire London youth united ... more - Greguf

I've been living in Hoxton for 8 years now, about 10 minute walk from the City and 15 minute walk from Barbican and about 1 hour walk from Hackney Central or 1.5 hour walk from Upper Clapton. From my window I can see Ghurkin, the Shard and the new Skyscrapers down the City Road, including the Wafer. Across the Road there are a number of student hostels, Pitfield Street is all day long decorated with cyclist, moving up and down the street. It's a place where there were pleasure gardens and Shakespeare and Ben Johnson hang around (there are plaques that remind us about the past). From my point of view some comments about 'Hackney' are over the top, they say more about the 'writers' than the borough itself, they just, perhaps, feel relieved when they label Hackney in derogative terms. My place is the most tranquil place with such magnificent views, a stone throw to landmarks, within a walking distance to my workplace in the City, and with the kindest, most friendly neighbours around. ... more - JBL

I've lived in Hackney for 17 years and there's only one thing you need to know about it... If you live in the mare street area, or the nightingale estate area or even Pembury estate and especially Clarence road, there's a high chance of something dangerous happening to you. In 2001 to 2002, there are 9 people shot dead on Clarence road, this doesn't include stabbing. Bare in mind that Clarence road is literally what it is a road, not a big one. Neither this road was given the name murder mile for a reason.

Hackney, unlike the rest of the places listed here, is a borough. And unlike the other places on this list which are situated in boroughs: Tottenham (Haringey), Brixton (Southwark), etc. the entire borough of Hackney is considered dangerous and has 'twice the gang problem of any other area' according to an official Scotland Yard report.Annually, it consistently has higher rate of homicide, gun, violence against the person crime rates than any other borough in London.

As far as zones 1, 2 and 3 go in London, Hackney is the most dangerous borough.Forget "gentrification", most parts of the borough are more dangerous than ever. Muggings, stabbing even acid attacks are commonplace. In addition tot he local crooks add to the mixture the large amount of incomers on Fridays and Saturday who get drunk and get as anti-social as they an get. Hackney is a hole.Lived there for a year. The happiest day of my life was when I was able to move to the neighbouring Islington which is 100 times safer, cleaner, more civilized and with better public services.

There is a big difference between Hackney Central (Council/Tenant flats) and Hackney Wick (Big Artist Studios) if you are an artist you could work there but you might want to live somewhere else (If it's temporary accommodation you are looking for Stratford isn't too far as there are inns and temporary accommodation near Westfield too - Stratford was improved when London Hosted the 2012 Olympic Games)

I'm moving to Hackney soon, I know people that lived there all their life and it can be dangerous but it's getting better and like most places just be careful where you walk alone and at night, avoid dark streets and with few people, if you can just drive where you need, you'll feel safer and it's safer. Otherwise during daylight is relatively safe.

I was at a hotel in Hackney a few days ago, and I can't believe my eyes. Everything there was dirty and icky. The gangs there look like they are going to declare war on each other like there is no tomorrow. I am surprised that anybody wants to live there. It is like a war zone that just wants to get another war.

Crime, street fights, graffiti, murder, drug dealing are literally the Hackney features. Is going there, living there let alone safe? Not in the slightest. I would love to know the percentage of people that love it, I would hazard a guess, it's quite low. Try to avoid as much as possible.
