English literature is the epitome of pointless. It has zero value in being studied, and serves no purpose in the real world. Math is used to make everything from computers to bridges, history is important to learn to prevent past events from repeating, and science is important because it relates to things sounding us everyday, and has led to so many invaluable discoveries, such as the cures for diseases. And of course, regular English is massively important for obvious reasons. You may not necessarily use all the subjects I listed above, but this does not change the fact that they are still so important in our world, and a lot more problems would exist today if we stopped studying them. But let me ask you this: What would happen if people stopped studying old English? Let me give you the obvious answer: Absolutely NOTHING. English Literature is the very definition of a useless subject. We need to learn proper grammar, punctuation and spelling, not what the red door symbolises or what the dead shark represents in a stupid book with absolutely no grammar. People say the English language is dying out because of technology, but why don't we learn how modern english works before studying Shakespeare and his amazing use of OLD ENGLISH? This subject isn't even useful in any way. When you end up in the workplace, a vast knowledge of words and professional use of language is necessary, not the amount of bs you can pull from the top of your head. If you thought my grammar was terrible, wait until you see other people in my school.

English literature is a bunch of bullsh**. How is it going to be beneficial in life. Will shakespeare really play a part in your future life. I really hope not! Do you really think people want to sit in their chair for 1 and a half hours talking about Shakespeare conveying his emotions and thoughts. Do you really think that Shakespeare himself thought about whether or not he's going to use a metaphor, simile or personificaiton. I highly doubt it. Is there a point in learning about things that had happened 400 years ago and is fictional. Children nowadays are wasting their lives reciting some bloody play that they will only do once. The essay you write for 1 or 2 exams will be a waste of time because at the end of the day no one will read it ever again. Although modern english is beneficial to current lives for communication will you ever say this to your girl/boyfriend thou is't well looking. Sorry to people who like english but your wasting your time reading a whole load of crap. ... more

I've already commented on this in a similar section (see ELA); Perhaps schools could offer specific types of literature: Modern realistic fiction, Victorian Literature, etc... Not such a bad idea. Just so you know, though, English Literature is the convergence of all other major world languages and noted playwrights and scholars developed syntactic and semantic rules still relevant to written grammar today. That's why it's studied in-depth, more especially in the United States. It ties back to the history of the Norman invasion, without which you wouldn't be writing in English, but in French. - Listlover77

There are only a handful of jobs in existence that would even require the slightest bit of English, if I want to be a pilot, apparently I have to learn about shakespeare, if I want to be an engineer, apparently I have to learn how to make speeches, if I want to be a game designer, apparently I have to learn to write essays on the most ridiculous short stories you would ever read. I absolutly hate every aspect of English. Completely useless and painful for me to have to attend 5 days a week, 40 weeks a year for the next 3 years.

Analyzing themes, reading nonsense books, and writing tons of essays about it is pointless. I understand that it is important to know reading and writing, but most of the time, we're reading books that do not apply to this day and age. Writing is such an important skill, however most of the kids in our class do not know how to write a basic email. How to write a letter to someone. How to write an essay for our college applications. English should only be teaching us how to write well.
