When the Inca Empire first appeared in Cuzco in 1100 CE, it controlled the Southern Andes. When Pizarro showed up in 1533, it owned like all of civilized South America. Held out against the Spanish for 36 years after their arrival, which is way longer than the Aztecs or whoever else. All without draft animals, wheels, or even a written language (though quipus could be a writing form). And to me, that is what makes them great.
