Hes not some last minute twist villain, hes not some colourful maniacal schemer, (not that I have any problem with that sort of villain mind you,) hes a legend. What makes him stand out from a narrative perspective though is that he is disgusted by the hero, Rango, and its not because Rango is some goody two shoes saint either; its because Rango is a liar who has merely managed to cheat death up to this point. When Jake confronts Rango for the first time, he decides that death is too good a fate for the cowardly Rango. He does not kill him; he destroys him. He exposes Rango for the fraud he is in front of all his friends who believe in him and runs him out of the town, not leaving him with a shred of dignity, and even driving the wayward protagonist to attempt to take his own life rather than live on in shame. Its only when Rango abandons the image of himself that hes fabricated and puts the welfare of the townsfolk above himself that he earns back his friends ... more
