I both love and hate this. Whereas some of the Halloween Specials are hilarious, and are great to watch, I have a theory which states that they were responsible for the downfall of the Simpsons. With the Treehouse of Horror episodes being a great success, the writers probably became addicted to writing things that were not a part of the main plot. We can tell this from more recent episodes, where many episodes are compilations of stories, and even in main plot episodes, many things are derived from Halloween Special plots.
