Swampert is really strong and it can learn a decent variety of moves to counter a lot of different types, like earthquake and hammer arm, which together, can counter 8 types. They are both good against steel and rock, so it's 8 not 10. Some idiot said Torterra could easily kill any starter pokemon, but honestly, it's one of the worst starters and is the slowest starter too. All the water type starters can learn Ice beam and fire, well has fire type moves. sure it may survive and land an earthquake or rock slide (for Charizard), but it is most likely going to lose. If you play ORAS, and you want to counter everybody? Pick Mudkip! Mudkip can counter the rock gym, marshtomp will take down the electric, fire, normal (with protect, since they use Slaking), and flying (with rock moves). Mega Swampert can take out the Psychic gym with surf since they are rock types. In Omega Ruby, the battles will be easier, since Primal Groudon's ability will let you take out the water gym. Together, they will defeat the Elite 4 and destroy Steven's team. Even without the super effectiveness, There is no major grass opponents (except for your rivals Sceptile). Also, Swampert has the highest base stats for any starter. Blaziken is my favorite starter, but stat wise, Swampert is my pick.

YEES! Swampert is amazing and doesn't rely on stupid abilities to actually be good. Mudkip is the cutest first stage and Swampert is the most awesome final stage. He can counter his checks, tank hits, and deal great damage. His mega is awesome, though his legs are tiny. Also, swampert is the meme lord, as there are many memes about mudkip, marshtomp, swampert, and mega swampert. LOOK THEM UP. He has a great design and truly is a monster, as in pocket monsters. He is my favorite pokemon of all time.

Swampert should be best overall starter. Water/ground is unbelievable typing. Only one weakness and it is 4x to grass. Teach him roar and scare away any grass enemies or defeat them with ice beam. Why did people pick Charizard as the best? Charizard is overrated. It absolutely sucks in-game, has a quad weakness and two normal weaknesses, and it's stuck with redundant STAB.Especially in Emerald, every starter is viable in Hoenn. Sceptile is severely underrated here for some reason.I might go so far as to say Swampert is overpowered. Swampert's typing is amazing. Being my first Pokemon starter, I always believed Swampert was one of the strongest Pokemon out there having high hp, atk, and def for a water type on top of their greatest weakness covered with him being dual type hence having immunity to electricity. Even his other stats such as sp. def and sp. atk are average they are still pretty high. His only downside was his low speed and ONLY weakness being a 4x on grass but they can be fixed with ice moves and his ability to tank hits extremely well.
