Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP or simply LRP) is an elite group formed by SL Army Special Forces (SF). These men have mastered the art of taking high profile targets far behind the enemy lines. LTTE, probably the deadliest terrorist group existed in our time, has lost many of their high ranked individuals due to LRP covert operations that brought the terrorist group to their knees. With outdated equipment, a lack of resources, these brave units achieved one of the most successful victories in modern history. So much so that most European Countries worked overtime to undermine the success of the Sri Lankan Special Forces due to pressure from Tamil Terrorist lobbies in their own constituencies. India who created the Tamil Tiger movement was on a quest for revenge after their own Prime Minister was killed by a Tamil Tiger had a change of heart and worked with the SL Government in providing tactical assistance whilst Russia too were involved in proving Aircraft and Ammunition.The Rapid Reaction Force which was an elite unite of the SF was the game changer in eliminating the Tamil Tigers.

I'm a member of the Sri Lankan Army and I can say the STF only played a minor role in the fight against the LTTE (the terrorist organization) since they were only a part of the police who was mainly created as VIP protection. But they were initially trained by the SAS. So they do have the capacity to counter terrorism. But actually it was the Army as a whole who eradicated 99% of the targets. The most elite special force in Sri Lanka is "SF" or "Special Force" they started as an elite small group named "combat tracker group" candidates were chosen from all arms of the Army. I have seen these guys live in action. These guys can kick anyone's asses when it comes to jungle warfare. Though they are trained for all round combat scenario they are exclusively used in jungle warfare. They have a special battalion who are known as "LRRP" Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol.
