I love this. Yeah it wasn't the same as the first anime series but if you want to rewatch the first series as it was just rewatch it, making a movie that's exactly similar would be a bore.Misty's and Brock's absence weren't such an awful thing as genwunners make it out to be. Misty was awful, boring, useless and annoying, Verity is actually way better than she could ever dream of being. Verity doesn't abuse Ash for no reason, she doesn't abuse her Pokemon, she actually genuinely cares for Ash and Pokemons in general, she's way better in one movie than Misty was in 5 seasons. As for Sorrel he's the third wheel guy just like Brock or Clemont but he never really did anything wrong. People should move the heck on. This is an alternate universe with different characters, your red haired waifu came back too many times already and stole Iris' and Serena's cameos (whether you want them to return or not is not the question - the main heroine returns one season later, Misty just hogged ... more

Very beautiful animation and nostalgia aside it's very different from the the first season which for me is a plus. I grew up with season 1 as it was airing in the late 90's and the differences were for the best. Brock and Misty's absence didn't bother me either. I was actually worried it would be too close to the 1st season because let me be honest, I don't want to watch a cropped recap of something I have seen before. The fresh new take on the beloved 1st meeting of Ash and Pikachu and seeing Ash struggling with right and wrong is a welcome departure from his usual character which to be honest gets more and more Mary Sue like with each new generation. No one truly feels happy to lose and seeing Ash actually get angry and storm off when he first lost to Cross (Charmander's evil original trainer) and seeing him say hurtful things to his best friend (s) shows a darker side to Ash and really fleshed him out. And as a bonus my own child adoree this movie so yay for movie 20.
