Slavery is a sin. In the old testament, God had blessed Israel above all other nations, and Israel was the most powerful nation in the world for thousands and thousands of years. So Israel was told to take slaves that were most likely prisoners of war. Would you rather have wanted the Bible say to kill every slave? Taking a slave is considered an act of mercy to most, compared to ending their lives. And when we think of slavery, in our modern world, we think of the way America treated black slaves, making them work with no pay, in the hot sun, with whips at their backs, and constant pain. In fact, most of the slaves this is talking about is most likely what we would call today "servants", they were probably treated well, with no pain, and given places to sleep and such.
