It's pretty close between Blackwater and Still life. In the end, I went with BWP because I always returned to still life for the clean parts, while I returned to BWP for the metal and clean parts. BWP is just more consistently enjoyable and more straight forward. Though I will admit that the metal parts of Still life are incredible and I return to that album many times. But the straight forwardness of BWP edgesit out slightly.

A lot of talent went into the making of Blackwater Park. It nails all of its hooks, the guitars sound great, and Steven Wilson's production really enhanced the atmosphere. I will admit, I don't like death metal, but it is still one of the greatest prog metal albums of all time! Everyone should hear it at least one time in their life. - slipperyjack30

The atmosphere that is present in this albums is both beautiful and strange at the same time! I've never experienced the feelings that these songs gave me in any other songs (or in any other form of art). Mikael's growls are perfect. Riffs are well written. Everything in this album is near perfect. This has the potential to be the greatest album in metal. If only more people could look past the growls and enjoy the songs as a whole.

Blackwater Park is just too dark and miserable to be Opeths best album. Its not even close. For me, Orchid and Morningrise represent Opeth at its best because, in these albums, the death metal sound, rather than coming out as a brutal onslaught of the senses, appears like a harmonious stream, balanced by beautiful classical guitar sections. I think that Still Life is also exceptional. However, it lacks the classical sophistication of the first two albums. After that, Watershed and Ghost Reveries are brilliant, though very much more theatrical than Orchid.

Gateway album for myself and many others. When the first riff of The Leper Affinity hits you know you've struck gold. You don't even have to like death metal to get into this album. It's an accessible and dynamic release that blends soft sounds with the brutality of the death metal genre. What Pink Floyd was to progressive rock, Opeth is to progressive death metal.
