Sadly, there was one snapping turtle who got it's shell stuck in a plastic ring and grew up with the ring around it. Luckily the co-founders of the 5 Gyres Institute found the turtle in a drainage canal and cut the ring off in 1998. The turtle now lives at the Star Eco Station and her shape has improved over time. The turtle has since been dubbed the Mae West Turtle due to it's shell shape. - LedgerDraven

Turtles are so cute and underrated! Somebody told me a heartbreaking story about somebody who left a bottle on the ground and a turtle got his head stuck in it. Sadly it was too late to get the bottle off of his head. He's now used in classrooms as an example to tell children not to litter. I hope the kids love him and are kind to him!
