He was a brilliant strategist. Many say that he lost in North Africa eventually but we must remember the circumstances. He had neither air or naval superiority and the allies, had lots of compromised intel about his troops and their positions. He was very short on supplies and fought with inferior equipment. Not only that the allies had vastly superior numbers (They had around 3-4 times more), they also had equipment better suited to desert warfare which Rommel simply didn't have access to. Yet, many of his battles led to the Germans inflicting much greater losses on the enemy. Truly a great military tactician. If he had the amount of supplies and troops the allies had, he would be totally untouchable.

He was the soldier in its genuine meaning. In my vision the best of all field marshalls FMG Erwin Rommel. His tactics, strategies, and his talents were extraordinary. His respect to enemy was famous to all. Very kind. His tactics were genius. His strategies sure were extraordinary because even a tactician like himself couldn't safe his armies. Not the best tactician of WWII Germany but certainly one of the better ones. He would have made a very good commander at the level of the devision. That is also what his colleges said about him. Apart from winning a few battles and losing the entire campaign in North Africa he didn't really do much except for annoying Kesselring. Kesselring, Von Bock and Brauchitsch are commanders that would have had a bigger chance of winning in North Africa and Heinrici and Guderian are better tacticians in my opinion but still he was one of the better tacticians of later WWII Germany. When he was campaigning in France he still was one of the less competent tacticians (his men described his tactics as routinely organizing suicide charges that miraculously never killid him) in my opinion but latter he got better at tactics. If the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine supplied the Afrika korps efficiently, attacked and occupied Malta instead of Crete, and given him 2 more motorized divisions, Rommel would have crossed the Nile, taken the Suez Canal and the oil fields and ports in the middle east. Then a southern pincer into southern Russia would be introduced. Game over in Europe.

Defending Africa with smaller Army lesser equipment against Allies for such a long period with inadequate access to supply, this must be the most difficult task in WW2 for any German Commander. Please remember that German Soldier can handle Frost bite better than Desert Heat.

He was brilliant because he did so much with so little. Most generals had far more assets to work with than him, and he did as much or more than the generals who were given more to work with.
