Erwin Helmchen is an unknown legend of the German football who played as an inside forward.
During his career (1924-1951), he struck a well documented total of 618 league goals, 596 of them in top division outings.108 more goals were definitely netted by Helmchen but not well verified yet. The tally of his senior career is estimated to be around 850 goals and if junior career and all friendlies included the number is even more than 2,500. However, not even an international appearence for Germany. According to these numbers, Helmchen is the greatest top division scorer of all times and the greatest scorer of all times.
RSSSF claims that those goals were scored in 'Bezirksligen' (2nd division), but this is wrong. The structure of the German championships were regional those years and Helmchen played in top tier (VMBV, Gauliga).
IFFHS recognised Pel茅 as best top division scorer including his regional/state goals (since 2018).

As a continue to the previous description, it's questionable how possible is for the international football world to accept Erwin Helmchen as leading scorer in categories he was distinguished and instead of legends like Pel茅, Pusk谩s, Bican.
He never played with German national team and there has been some speculation why that was so. He was almost a decade a 'candidate', but always something was between him and his debut (injury, bad form, possibly bad impression to national team's coach Sepp Herberger).
One more thing is the unverified number of matches he struck so many goals.
Finally, according to one source the tally of his senior career is 1,396 goals (also not mentioned number of games and usually two differend sources needed for a minimum validation). But if this is true, he's the third of all times after Bican and M眉ller.
