2001: A Space Odyssey should always be 1st place because:

1: Its Physics are 90% realistic
2: It has a straight on story of what happens
3: Space environment has no sound which is very real
4: Uses classical 19th century music (Very calm happy music)
5: Its released in the 60s before star wars
6: It makes more sense
7: Very interesting and adventerous
8: The movie is supposed to to be a future prediction the whole time. In the 60s, people thought there would be spaceships and moon bases in the year 2001
9: It was so popular, the made its sequel in 1984 called 2010 pushing the story further
10: The whole filmed in one very large room that's less expensive than filming in several different locations like star wars.

This is my favorite MOVIE of all time. I was about 15 when it was released and saw it in Cinerama in Tampa. It was totally amazing and cemented my desire to have a career in the space program ultimately supporting every shuttle mission for NASA at KSC. The overall them was cerebral and amazing. The story was fantastic and the SFX are still beyond even some of what we see today. I will admit it is not for everyone and I highly recommend reading the book for explanations of some of the more esoteric parts but it is truly an astounding film accomplishment, particularly when considering the date it was made.

Unlike star wars return of the jedi (I'm not calling out the others because they don't have this problem), it stand the test of time. Instead of using crappy green screen effects, they use well-made practical effects that look good enough to have come out in 2001. But this movie came out in 1968. Some might say that the narrative is confusing at times. And I don't know where they're getting that from. I wasn't confused at all in any part of this movie.

Honestly, this is way better than star wars. I'm no saying star wars is a bad trilogy but the only reason why people say it's the best movie is because they have one of the biggest fan dims in the world. Plus, 2001 leaves you with something to think about that,for once, is supposed to be interpreted I'm your own way. Star wars doesn't have much only a lot of memorable moments but let's be real here, would you rather see Darth Vader announce he's lukes father or watch Dave deactivate hal? - Cucboi99

Also, it got so many predictions about space and the future correct, it's unreal.

I'm not sure what sane person would place movies like 2001: A Space Odyssey BELOW THE PHANTOM MENACE! 2001 is one of the most chilling, subtle films in science fiction history. There are so many interpretations of it one can make and everyone can take away a different experience from it.

I'm not sure we can call it a science fiction movie at this point. A lot of the technology being demonstrated in this movie is being used today. So can we call it a 'science' movie now?
