The reason this song is sad is that they're talking about a former band member by the name of Syd Barrett who left the band because of increasingly worse mental issues. He had schizophrenia, and lived as a recluse in his mother's basement for forty years. Ironically, he wandered into the studio that Pink Floyd was recording in, while they were playing this song. this was also his last encounter with the band. - ikedrums
